Archdiocese of Indianapolis mourns Archbishop Emeritus Daniel Buechlein

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis mourns the death of their Archbishop-Emeritus Daniel M. Buechlein, OSB, who passed to eternal life on Thursday January 25.  He served as Archbishop of Indianapolis from 1993 to 2011.  

  • 1938                                       born in Jasper, Indiana, to Carl and Rose Buechlein. 
  • August 15, 1963                     made his solemn profession as a Benedictine monk
  • May 3, 1964                           ordained to the priesthood at St. Meinrad Archabbey
  • August 1971                           named President-Rector of St. Meinrad School of Theology
  • 1982                                       named President-Rector of St. Meinrad College
  • 1987-1992                              served as the third Bishop of Memphis
  • July 14, 1992                          appointed by Pope John Paul II as fifth Archbishop of Indianapolis 
  • September 21, 2011               Pope Benedict accepts his resignation, due to health reasons
  • 2011                                       retires to St. Meinrad Archabbey
