In 1992, the United States Bishops voted to accept the ritual text for Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest. It was hoped that it would provide a means for assemblies to gather on Sunday even when a priest was not available to celebrate the Eucharist each week. The text was revised again in 2007 to better incorporate the Liturgy of the Hours and to offer improved rubrics. Local ordinaries must give permission for the use of these texts.
This commentary offers a thought-provoking study of the theological and pastoral issues involved in such celebrations. It is an essential resource and guide for deacons, parish liturgy commissions, and for those who prepare liturgies.
