The Director of Sacred Liturgy helps to coordinate the celebration of the liturgy under the direction of the Pastor. This includes all Sunday liturgies, weekday liturgies, Holy Days, Weddings, Funerals, baptisms, etc. The Director works closely with the volunteers at Saint Mark the Evangelist and part of a team that ensures that all is made ready for beautiful, reverent, and consistent liturgies.
Essential Functions:
- Recruit and promote the formation of all liturgical ministers of the parish, including altar servers, ushers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, readers
- Working with the volunteer Liturgical Ministry Coordinator to produce a timely schedule of liturgical ministers through designated software,
- Schedule and conduct altar server training
- Organize rehearsals prior to major liturgies (i.e. Holy Week)
- Serve as/oversee sacristans in organizing and preparing for Mass
- Assist as primary Master of Ceremonies
- Liaison with visiting clergy to inform of the liturgical practices of Saint Mark the Evangelist
- Participate in weekly staff meeting
- Make certain all common vestments and sacred vessels properly cared for
- Unlocking and locking the church before and after all liturgies.
- Prepare the church for all liturgies Sundays, weekdays, funerals, weddings, and baptisms.
- Assist priests in the planning of weddings, funerals and baptisms as needed.
- Maintain liturgical supplies at all locations including hosts, wine, candles, etc.
- Set the Lectionaries for Mass.
- Make sure collection bags are in the usher’s closet and that each liturgy is staffed with ushers
- Post the liturgical schedule (prepared by Volunteer Liturgical Coordinator) in the sacristy.
- Develop the Prayers of the Faithful as needed.
- Coordinate and Promote Eucharistic Adoration, including schedules, resources, formation for Adorers, and Chapel care and maintenance.
- Prepare the Order of Worship for Funeral and other liturgies as needed.
- Oversee consistency of streaming of Live-Stream Liturgies
- Develop a working knowledge of the sound board in the church
- Work closely and coordinate with Pastoral Care Coordinator and Volunteers in the tracking of those taking the Eucharist for Pastoral Care
- Develop a working knowledge of bringing Holy Communion to the sick and homebound by Extraordinary Ministers after Mass.
- Assist with the recruiting, training, scheduling and ongoing formation of Pastoral Care volunteer ministers.
Sacramental Formation
- Teach the Baptismal Preparation Course
- Assist on the team with in-house marriage preparation and marriage enrichment programs
- Assist on the team with Confirmation preparation as needed
- Assist on the team in OCIA Presentations as needed
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Master’s degree in Liturgical Theology preferred, related theological field with extensive
- liturgical experience acceptable.
- • 3-5 years’ experience in liturgy at parish or equivalent level.
- • Strong knowledge of liturgical documents and rites.
- • Excellent organizational, communication, and program development skills.
- • Ability to coordinate large events and work with diverse groups.
- Successfully complete a criminal background check
- Knowledge and competency in areas of maintenance and repair

- Must be able to communicate clearly in both verbal and written form, strong organizational and multitasking skills;
- Must be a team player;
- Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both external and internal contacts
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
