The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe is seeking a Music Director to provide leadership for the Shrine’s sacred music ministry. The Music Director plans and directs music for weekend Masses, Holy Days, seasonal liturgies, and other special celebrations while supporting the Shrine’s distinctive liturgical and musical mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and direct music for weekend Masses, Holy Days, seasonal liturgies, and special celebrations.
- Direct, schedule, and rehearse adult choirs and coordinate musicians for liturgical celebrations.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and provide ongoing formation for cantors and music volunteers.
- Serve as organist/pianist as needed and demonstrate strong keyboard, vocal, and conducting skills.
- Coordinate and support the Shrine’s concert series and other sacred music programming.
- Develop and implement liturgical music practices in collaboration with Shrine leadership and in accordance with diocesan directives, Roman Catholic liturgical norms, and applicable national guidelines.
- Oversee music resources, instruments, and related audio-visual needs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in music, sacred music, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Strong knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy, sacred music, and appropriate liturgical repertoire.
- Proficiency in keyboard, voice, choral direction, and conducting.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Availability for weekend, evening, Holy Day, and seasonal liturgical responsibilities.
